Quid Pro Quo

Last week had been a fun time for me, enjoying the cool Baguio breeze in the company of two of my sisters. If only I get to live a life of no work and just be an insignificant bum in this world, you wouldn’t hear any complaint from me. But alas, it’s back to reality: traffic, pollution that is Metro Manila, bills to pay, work, work, and some more work.

My sisters are still here. They’ll be heading home this Wednesday. I’ll be celebrating my natal day this week, tomorrow actually (happy birthday, self!), so it was sweet of my sister to have her leave from work extended. I’m not the type that celebrates birthdays anyway. For me, it’s just one of those ordinary days. The difference though is that I’ve learned some and lost some, and yeah, I’ve grown a year older. But in times like this, one couldn’t help but feel all mushy and stuff as people you know and care about find a way to reach you, either in person or through some other means, just to say “Happy Birthday.” And the messages on my phone are already coming in. The first I got was from my niece all the way in Jolo, Sulu. Thanks, Leesha!

I’m actually at the office as I write this. This is the exchange I got for going on a five-day, no-work Baguio escapade, my quid pro quo. Working seven straight days this week, and on my birthday too, it may seem too much an exchange to some. But the time well-spent with two of my siblings and the tons of memories we shared and photos we took (to follow soon) is an exchange I’m willing to bargain all over again.
