Ubergasted: David Cook Wins Idol

I said once that I will be ubergasted if David Cook wins the seventh season of American Idol. I was, like... literally my jaw dropped when Ryan Seacrest announced that this 25-year-old from Blue Springs, Missouri won. I guess I share the same reaction with avid watchers of the show as the other David has been consistently wowing millions of viewers not only in the United States but also in countries like ours, and of course all three AI judges, especially Simon and Randy who both made the bold prediction during the Finals night that he is the most likely to win. Well, David Cook also did that--wowing his countless minions, and I know a lot of them--but it seemed that all the chips were falling in David A’s favor, and this was made apparent in previous AI episodes. So when the two finalists were on stage for the culmination of AI7 and Seacrest announced that about 12 million votes separated them both, I thought, “Boy, Archuleta wins.” But ubergasted I was.

It was also nice seeing my real bets, Michael Johns and Carly Smithson, singing together onstage. Seacrest was right in saying that indeed this season had been quite a shocker when it came to the elimination, with the two booted out early in the competition. Renaldo Lapuz, that lavishly-clad Pinoy with the cape and the tassel and the hat with the matching white feather, was given a full-marching band treatment when he rendered his “I Am Your Brother” song, something that the judges couldn’t stop guffawing about during the auditions. But for some reason, I didn’t find it funny anymore.

This season did break records when it came to viewership and the number of votes cast every results night. Every week of this AI had been the topic of conversation in the office during lunch and even at our workstations. We’d also hear other people from different accounts discussing who fared well, who was the most likely to be voted out, and things to that effect; it was that popular. Kudos goes to the people behind AI for finding better Idol wannabes this season.

Congrats, David. That goes to the both of you.
