Woohoo, Oded!

I just found out that the one who took this photo, Oded Balilty of The Associated Press, brought home the Breaking News Photography award in the 2007 Pulitzer Prizes "for his powerful photograph of a lone Jewish woman defying Israeli security forces as they remove illegal settlers in the West Bank." Since the photograph is protected by copyright, the image above is one of the many I took when the winners of the 2007 World Press Photo contest found its way to SM Mall of Asia last May 19 (more here). Yes, this picture, shot through the lens of Mr. Balilty, is also included in the roster of winners, bagging the People in the News: 1st Prize Singles of said competition.

Photos like this give me more reasons to follow this calling. I even had my eyes set on a digital camera I saw during my urban wanderings. I’m planning on getting a 6MP in the meantime (for the SLR types, shortly), and I already found one at a great price. I hope they won’t run out of stock. Even if I don’t turn out to be professional, just the mere thought of capturing the vividity of the moment and turning those into works sealed for posterity are enough reasons for me to click, click, click. Thanks for photographers like Oded, neophytes like me get the impetus we need.
