From Malu Fernandez to the "Desperate Housewives"

A few months back, the talk of the blogging world was Malu Fernandez. She was once a columnist for People Asia where she wrote her infamous article about how she brushed elbows with OFWs in Dubai and on a plane bound somewhere. She goes on to chronicle the trip, the sights, how expensive her stuff were, blah, blah, blah and then wrote something she thought was utterly funny but made Pinoy’s BP around the globe go haywire.

Here we have a fellow Filipino who, instead of lauding the cause and plight of Filipino contract workers, ridiculed her own countrymen for the whole world to read, all for what was supposedly a “funny” write-up. The intense public clamor made her decide to resign both from Manila Standard and People Asia. She also issued a public apology on the matter.

Now we have another racially-discriminatory remark, this time all the way from Hollywood. On the September 30 episode of “Desperate Housewives,” Susan (Teri Hatcher), when told that she might be hitting menopause, said this to her doctor during a gynecological consult: "Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines?"

This tells a lot. Again, one of those “funny” punchlines come to mean differently, especially to those who were supposedly the butt of the joke--our doctors. Has our educational system been that tarnished that our integrity are now questioned? Is this how people from other countries, the US mainly, look at us? It might be just a joke to the writers of the show but jokes are half meant. And to say such thing without regard for the person’s feelings is rather boorish. There is a petition online that demands for an apology from ABC and "Desperate Housewives." The petition explains the sentiments of the masa regarding this inappropriate discriminatory denigration. As of writing, 32, 381 people have signed it. Join the cause, unless you're happy to be an ass wiper.

On another note, I saw the movie "Pervert!" out of boredom a couple of weeks ago. It's a low-budgeted sexploitation film that had it's funny moments, looking back. Now, in the middle of the movie, the lead guy and his father's mistress were having a conversation, you know, the getting-to-know-you type of thing. When the girl asked, "If you were to eliminate a race off the entire face of the world, what would it be? [not exact words]" The guy answered, "Ooh, Asians." Thinks for a moment, "Filipinos." And that was funny? Duh.
