Babaeng Third World

The most disturbing thing happened last night. At around 11:00 there was a commotion of sorts from our neighbor. I live in Maharlika Village, a rather notorious place in the heart of Taguig City. Muslim communities have always been labeled like that. The entranceway to these areas seemed to have a huge billboard screaming “Moros inside! Beware.” The stereotyping is just effin unbelievable. Taxi drivers wouldn’t even like to take in passengers if they’re from Maharlika Village. They’re scared that they won’t make it out alive or something. Pathetic. To those who were brave enough to drive me all the way to Barracks Street, Maharlika (where I live), I hope they get to share it to the world that not all Muslims are like what they think we are. Their minds have been bludgeoned enough by too much news.

So anyway, around 11:00 last night I heard two people engaged in a heated argument. Stuff were flying as well, woosh-wooshing here and there. “Huhuhu. Putangnamo, tapos ako pa ngayon ang masama!” My lame attempt in deciphering what she said in Maguindanaon. I gathered that she happens to be connected to a staffing agency that recruits people, mostly Moslems who didn’t have college degrees or even high school diplomas from far-flung Mindanaon provinces—this makes me mad—for work abroad as domestic helpers, drivers, bell boys, merchandisers, et al. “Putangnamo, huhuhu.” She was screaming, sobbing, speaking in this foreign language against a backdrop of things smashed into pieces. But what caught my attention more was the weird noise that she was making—uh, uh, uh, uh—in between her sobs. It’s like the sound you hear when somebody is being stabbed. Alarmed, I went outside my room and found my cousin out of his as well, obviously woken up by this late-night hullabaloo. “Uh, uh, uh. Putangnamo mo. Uh, uh, uh.” What’s happening? Is she being butchered to death? Uh, uh, uh. What I heard next was so disturbing, I didn’t want to believe it. My cousin said she was beating herself, bashing on her tummy with her fists—uh, uh, uh—inflicting wounds not only on herself, but to her unborn child as well. Unbelievable. Unimaginable. I didn’t get to sleep. Uh, uh, uh. God.
